Use-Case Guide

Choosing an AI API for coding

There is no permanently best coding model; rankings shift with every release and public benchmarks rarely look like your codebase. This page shows the active models in our catalog and a way to test them on your own code.

Side-by-side pricing comparison

Active pay-as-you-go rates from our pricing catalog, sourced from each provider's official page. The catalog may lag new launches. Use the category filter to narrow the list.

Catalog rates are a single pricing snapshot, not a full tier schedule. This table does not select rates by prompt length; long prompts may cost more and change the ranking. Use the API cost calculator for supported Haiku 5.5 and xAI prompt tiers. Announced Google increases are not applied before their effective date.

Prices are per 1M tokens (standard pay-as-you-go). Always verify with your provider before budgeting.

How to evaluate a model for coding

Code is one of the few outputs you can check automatically. Use that.

  1. 01
    Cost per passing change

Give each model 20 small real tasks from your repo with tests. Count how many produce code that passes on the first or second try. Divide total spend by passes.

  2. 02
    Context is the hidden cost

Coding prompts carry files, diffs, and history. Measure your typical input size with the token estimator; input tokens usually dominate the bill, and cached-input pricing can matter a lot.

  3. 03
    Count review time

Note minutes spent fixing or reading each output. A model that is slightly pricier but needs less review is often cheaper per merged change.

  4. 04
    Check agent loop length

If you use an agent that calls tools repeatedly, one task can be many API calls. Log calls per task before projecting a monthly cost.

Frequently asked questions

Which model is best for coding?
We do not rank models for coding. Benchmark leadership changes often and published scores may not reflect your languages or style. Test two or three candidates from the table on your own tasks.
Are code-specialised models cheaper?
Sometimes. Some providers offer code-focused models at lower rates. Check the table for active catalog prices instead of relying on figures quoted elsewhere, which go stale.
How many tokens does a coding request use?
It varies widely. Paste a representative prompt, including the files you send, into the token estimator. Output is usually smaller than input for edits and reviews.
Should I use a reasoning model for code?
Reasoning models can help on hard multi-step problems but often use many more output tokens. Measure total tokens per task before assuming they are worth it.
Do these estimates include taxes or enterprise discounts?
No. Rates are standard pay-as-you-go prices from our active catalog, sourced from official pricing pages. Enterprise agreements, committed-use discounts, regional pricing, and taxes are not reflected. Confirm final pricing with the provider.
