Methodology

Who maintains this data

AIUtilityVerse is maintained by an independent editorial team. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by, or paid by any AI provider, and providers do not pay for inclusion, rankings, or recommendations. Our goal is to provide neutral, transparent decision-support tooling rather than to republish provider marketing.

Pricing data sources

All pricing data on AIUtilityVerse is drawn directly from the official provider documentation and API pricing pages published by each provider we cover. We do not rely on third-party aggregators, community-maintained spreadsheets, or unofficial sources. Each covered provider links back to its canonical official pricing page so you can verify figures directly.

How pricing is reviewed and updated

Supported official pricing sources are checked automatically on a recurring production schedule, normally once every 24 hours while the service is active. We normalize standard pay-as-you-go token rates to a consistent per-million-token basis and record the date the active figure was last verified. Parsing failures and unusual or structural changes fail closed for review. This is not continuous monitoring, and we do not claim that prices are updated the moment a provider changes them.

Because provider pages and parsers can change between checks, a figure may not reflect a rate that changed after the last verified date. You can see which providers are currently covered and when each was last verified on the Pricing Sources & Data Status page. Providers that have not been verified are excluded from the public tools and that page until they are.

How costs are calculated

All calculators use pay-as-you-go token pricing. Input and output token costs are billed separately and summed to produce a per-request cost. That per-request cost is then multiplied by your monthly request volume to produce a monthly total. Where providers publish cached input pricing, that rate is included as an optional input.

The basic formula is:

Monthly cost = ((input_tokens × input_rate) + (output_tokens × output_rate)) × monthly_requests / 1,000,000

Rates are per one million tokens, as published by each provider. The division by 1,000,000 converts the per-million rate to a per-token rate applied to your volume.

What is excluded

Our estimates reflect standard, public pay-as-you-go rates only. The following are not included unless explicitly stated in a specific calculator:

  • Enterprise or committed-use volume discounts
  • Regional pricing variations
  • Taxes or VAT
  • Data transfer or egress charges
  • Rate-limit reservation fees
  • Platform fees from third-party API gateways

These factors can meaningfully affect your actual invoice. Always verify final pricing with your provider and your finance team before committing to a budget.

Agent and ROI calculators

The AI Agent Cost Calculator and AI Automation ROI Calculator include estimates for non-API costs such as developer time, infrastructure overhead, and human-in-the-loop review. These figures use conservative industry baselines and are clearly labelled as assumptions within each tool. You can adjust them to match your actual context.

Token counting

Token counts vary slightly between providers because each uses a different tokenizer. As a rule of thumb, one token is approximately three to four English characters, or about three-quarters of an average word. The Token Estimator tool lets you paste real text and see an estimated token count. Actual token counts may differ slightly from what your provider bills, depending on the model and tokenizer used.
