OpenAI vs Google Gemini
A provider-level comparison. Both OpenAI and Google ship several model lines at once, and Google labels some as preview. Picking a provider is mostly about context needs, how you handle preview models, and which ecosystem you already use.
Side-by-side pricing comparison
Active pay-as-you-go rates from our pricing catalog, sourced from each provider's official page. The catalog may lag new launches. Use the category filter to narrow the list.
Catalog rates are a single pricing snapshot, not a full tier schedule. This table does not select rates by prompt length; long prompts may cost more and change the ranking. Use the API cost calculator for supported Haiku 5.5 and xAI prompt tiers. Announced Google increases are not applied before their effective date.
Prices are per 1M tokens (standard pay-as-you-go). Always verify with your provider before budgeting.
Full comparison toolHow to compare two providers, not two models
Model names change every few months; provider habits change slowly. Evaluate the things that will still matter after the next release.
- 01Check stable vs preview status
Google's models page separates stable and preview models. A preview model can change behaviour or be withdrawn, so do not build a budget around one unless you can switch quickly.
- 02Test context you actually use
A large advertised context window only helps if the model finds information across it. Plant a fact near the middle of a long real document and ask about it, at the lengths you expect.
- 03Price images and files separately
Multimodal inputs are often billed differently from text. If you send images or PDFs, measure real usage from API responses rather than estimating by page count.
- 04Compare the surrounding platform
Rate limits, region availability, and billing setup differ. A model that is cheap but rate-limited at your volume may cost more in engineering workarounds.
